[Natfinwellness] Peer Mentor Qualifications

Kelsey,

For our peer mentors-outreach/coaching positions we have traditionally found the more successful candidates are upper-class undergraduate students (maturity and time management skills). Our peer mentors-operations have been more freshman and sophomores.

Over the years we have found our "open" recruitment from all colleges and programs cultivates the most diverse candidate pool. Every mentor enriches their placement with their life experiences, degree work, and skills. The only criteria we look for in any of our mentors is a passion to serve students. We will train them for the personal financial topics and coaching services they will be providing to students, but a desire to serve other students is integral to a successful placement.

I have attached copies of our mentor job descriptions (operations - 80% customer service/administrative|20% outreach/coaching) and outreach - 80% outreach/coaching|20% customer service/administrative). I also included the copies of the critical thinking assignment we ask students who are selected for interviews to complete and bring to their interview. The assignment provides a unique perspective into the student's thought processes.

At the request of several of our long-serving mentors, we are in the process of developing a special "senior mentor" designation for those mentors who enter their senior year while in our employment. The special designation that they can add to their resumes will consist of a special research project they will identify with the approval of their supervisor. The project will need to be completed within their senior year. Upon completion of their project, the mentor will receive a special certificate.

As you develop the job descriptions for your mentor positions, I would advise you to review the NACE Employer Survey findings (https://www.naceweb.org/knowledge/career-readiness-employer-survey-results.aspx?terms=employer%20OR%20survey). The survey identifies the seven competencies employers identify as essential to new college hire success when considering new college graduate candidates for their workplaces. By incorporating these competencies into your mentor positions will have a dual benefit - enrichment of core skills for mentors and development of skills employers look for when hiring.

Good luck and let me know if there's any additional help the UNT SMMC team can provide.

Hi Kelsey!

We look predominately at 1st and 2nd year students in the College of Business and related fields.

We also look for a GPA of a 3.0 and above. Additionally, Jared Pickens did his PhD dissertation on selecting of peer mentors. I have a note out to him to see if we may be able to share his results on this listserv.

Have a great weekend!

Subject: [Natfinwellness] Peer Mentor Qualifications
Happy Friday Everyone!

We are currently working on a proposal for a peer mentor program and were hoping for a bit of feedback from others on the qualifications you look for when hiring peer mentors. If you have peer mentors what are your desired and/or required qualifications for them? Some things we are thinking about is required GPA, grade level, experience, and any other skills you might look for.

If you have any info you could pass onto us that would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply!
