The news about closing the Li Xianting Film School is distressing but not
altogether surprising. The teachers, and Wang Wo in particular, have been
eloquent critics of the state-sponsored education system. I have conducted
interviews with the teachers and students at the LXFS and published the
results in "Film Schools in the PRC: Professionalization and Its
Discontents," in Mette Hjort, ed. _The Education of the Filmmaker in
Europe, Australia, and Asia_, coming out these days from Palgrave
Macmillan.
