Xi vs the Pope (2)
To confirm Xun Liu's conjecture:  the Pope announced last November that he would visit the U.S. in late September 2015.  As of February 2015, the timing of Xi Jinping's state visit had not yet been set, though it was anticipated to occur around now on account of an event at the U.N. in which he was expected to take part.
It is likely that XJP and his staff, who are wont to dismiss religious leaders as "jackals" or "terrorists," did not anticipate that the Pope would receive a  vastly more enthusiastic popular welcome than he would.  This outcome may have rankled, but it could also have been taken as an amusing confirmation of his hosts' stupidity.  I am sure that what matters most to him is that the domestic Chinese media should be saturated with images of the strong, deft leader impressing the foreigners.  As the original post made clear, the Chinese media have delivered.  Mission accomplished.
