Xi vs the Pope (1)
My question is:
Were Xi and his advisers aware in advance of the US government's plan for the Pope's visit?
I suspect that they were. Then the next question is:
Why did they go ahead?
I think any of the world leaders would be wary of vying for public attention or praise with this particular Pope. Did someone within the CCP apparatus make a miscalculation here? Or were they confident or comfortable enough with the US arrangements to go ahead with Xi's visit? If the latter is true, doesn't that show that Xi and his government is rather self-assured about their relative importance in the eyes of the world?
My two cents.
