Here’s my translation of Yi Sha’s poem “Mao.”

MAO
these days I’ve been reading
a biography of mao zedong
published overseas
each day a few chapters
many times
in the middle of reading
I have been grinning
having to think of
an older friend from former times
I’m surprised to discover
in many ways
he was learning from mao
his way of thinking
his style of talking
his habits on stage
I discover such older friends
are still all over town
they are all around us
even my father
is one of them
reading further
I discover I am
different from them
but the scary thing is
though I never tried to imitate him
the resemblance is there
