<p class="p3">these days I’ve been reading<br />
a biography of mao zedong<br />
published overseas<br />
each day a few chapters</p>
<p class="p3">many times<br />
in the middle of reading<br />
I have been grinning<br />
having to think of<br />
an older friend from former times</p>
<p class="p3">I’m surprised to discover<br />
in many ways<br />
he was learning from mao<br />
his way of thinking<br />
his style of talking<br />
his habits on stage<br />
I discover such older friends<br />
are still all over town</p>
<p class="p3">they are all around us<br />
even my father<br />
is one of them</p>
<p class="p3">reading further<br />
I discover I am<br />
different from them<br />
but the scary thing is<br />
though I never tried to imitate him<br />
the resemblance is there</p>
