Cambria Press is pleased to announce that the groundbreaking book, Modern
Poetry in China: A Visual-Verbal Dynamic

<http://www.cambriapress.com/books/9781604978629.cfm>

by Dr. Paul Manfredi is now available! The book was successfully launched
at the recent 2014 MLA annual convention in Chicago.
It is part of the highly prestigious Cambria Sinophone World Series
<http://www.sas.upenn.edu/ealc/publications/cambria-sinophone-world-series>
 headed by world-renowned sinologist Dr. Victor Mair (University of
Pennsylvania); the series includes books by Nobel laureate Gao Xingjian
and famed cultural critic Liu Zaifu.

The history of approximately one century of modern Chinese poetry
production has been addressed broadly in scholarship, but such broad
strokes tend to miss important dynamics which fall outside of general
narratives. The importance of Chinese visual tradition to modern Chinese
poets is a good case in point. Accordingly, this book addresses specific
manifestations of the nexus connecting modernity and visuality in Chinese
poetry.

It begins with a discussion of May Fourth poetics as exemplified in the
groundbreaking work of Li Jinfa, China's first "Symbolist" poet. From
there the book traces notable developments of visuality in the new form or
free verse writing (called Xinshi or "New Poetry") through mid-century
modernist experiments in Taiwan (focusing on Ji Xian). The book then
explores the avant-garde poetry of Luo Qing and Xia Yu before returning to
mainland Chinese developments of Misty poets Yan Li and his contemporaries.

The work concludes with an extensive analysis of poets and painters
writing and exhibiting in the twenty-first century. This innovative study
is an essential book for scholars and collections in art, Asian studies,
and world literature.

Making the book even more valuable is the fact that the book includes
rare, stunning color images of works by Li Jinfa, Ji Xian, Luo Qing, Xia
Yu, Yan Li, among others.
