I am so happy to know this! Thank you, Stuart. It sounds like an incredible discovery.

BTW, my research suggests that Woolf’s claim that the officers of the Hawke were in on the Dreadnought Hoax is probably not true. As I write in The Girl Prince:

It was quite impossible for the Hawke’s officers to have been observing the hoax from the deck of their ship. On 7 February 1910, the Hawke was anchored near Buoy 26, off Sheerness in the Thames estuary, while the Dreadnought was in Portland Harbour, more than 150 miles away. (189)

So we can probably assume that at least some of those officers who were having ‘a gay time’ in 1910 were blown up in 1914. Also, British warships were not as well designed as German ones, defensively. It was all to do with the location and storage

So we can probably assume that at least some of those officers who were having ‘a gay time’ in 1910 were blown up in 1914. Also, British warships were not as well designed as German ones, defensively. It was all to do with the location and storage of the shells below deck, and the use of the dumb waiter bringing them up on deck for loading. This perhaps explains why the ship blew up and sank so quickly.
