So we can probably assume that at least some of those officers who were having ‘a gay time’ in 1910 were blown up in 1914.  Also, British warships were not as well designed as German ones, defensively.  It was all to do with the location and storage of the shells below deck, and the use of the dumb waiter bringing them up on deck for loading.  This perhaps explains why the ship blew up and sank so quickly.
