In response to Ellen (a fellow cat-lover). Since you mentioned Howards End, it's worth noting that "Bast" was the name of the Egyptian cat god. So I'm sure that Forster, who traveled to Egypt, was being deliberate with the name Leonard Bast.

I realize killing a cat (I don't use the euphemisms) does not mean someone
is a sadistic cat killer, but the incident does upset me. I looked to make
    sure the incident is
fiction. Not funny -- I'm an 18th century scholar by trade (so to speak)
and I remember Darnton's The Great Cat Massacre: cats were persecuted for
    centuries and only
recently has public sentiment come round to regarding them as the equal of
a dog (ironic joke). Written around the same time, in Howards End Charles
    Wilcox (or his
chaffeur) talks about careless running over of a cat as "flattening a cat"
and is amazed at Margaret Shlegel's upset. But then she cares about
    "chickens and children"
too. We are supposed to dislike Charles Wilcox thoroughly.

As some will already know, I am handing over the reins of Woolf Studies
Annual to Benjamin Hagen at the University of South Dakota, beginning with
the 2022 volume. The forthcoming volume 27 (2021) will be the last under my
editorship. I am grateful to Ben for agreeing to take this on, and I'm
confident he will continue WSA's practice of publishing high-quality
scholarship on Woolf and her milieu. My deep thanks to all the editorial
board members, past and present, and in particular to Amanda Golden, Reviews
Editor, who will continue in that role, alleviating for Ben, as she did for
me, a particularly onerous aspect of editing an academic journal.

I am sure Benjamin will do a wonderful job, but it does feel like the end of an era, Mark.

Thank you so much for your work at the editor of the WSA. It is such an inspiring and illuminating publication that has taught me so very much over the years. What a wonderful legacy.

We have become more civilized: we no longer take pleasure in tying cats to spits and slowly roasting them over fires, as French aristocrats used to do for fun in eighteenth-century France, wrote Leonard Woolf. Where? Probably not in his autobiography. Probably in ?After the Deluge? (2 vols) or ?Principia Ethica? (i.e. vol. 3 of the former).
