Subject: [Vwoolf] Woolf, Conrad, and bosse
In her essay "Joseph Conrad," written on Conrad's death and first published in 1924, Woolf quotes from the French Lieutenant's conversation with Marlow in Lord Jim. One bit of the Frenchman’s comment that she does not quote, as reported by Marlow, is: "'I have rolled my hump (roulé ma bosse),' he said, using the slang expression with imperturbable seriousness, 'in all parts of the world . . . '"
