Yes, you grill beneath a flame in a gas cooker; my husband's grandmother's
holiday cabin had a 1930s version.  Under the oven was a second chamber, on
the ceiling of which there were two rows of perforations for gas to come
out.  You turned on the gas, lit the flame with a match at the near end of
each line of perforations, the flame caught and moved back from hole to
hole with a whoosh, and you were, er, cooking with gas.

I grew up cooking with a modern version of the same, though in the US, we
called it a stove (though it wasn't a stove in UK terms).
