 The "nondescript" character to whom Hornby refers is presumably the nameless man on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral. He embodies one of the metaphors for a novel stuffed with literary allusions which is like a leather bag stuffed with pamphlets. As such the novel contains a smaller version of itself as an instance of self-reference. This sort of thing is what makes reading Mrs Dalloway such fum. Molly Hoff
