1) The US Department of Education has announced a new *Graduate Assistance
in Areas of National Need (GAANN)* competition. From the funding notice (
http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=275600):

The GAANN Program provides grants to academic departments and programs of
institutions of higher education (IHEs) to support graduate fellowships for
students with excellent academic records who demonstrate financial need and
plan to pursue the highest degree available in their course of study at the
institution.

A project must provide fellowships in one or more of the following areas of
national need: Area, Ethnic, and Cultural Studies; Biological Sciences/
Life Sciences; Chemistry; Computer and Information Sciences; Engineering;
Foreign Languages; Mathematics; Nursing; Physics; Psychology; and
Educational Evaluation, Research, and Statistics.

An institution must provide, from non- Federal funds, an institutional
matching contribution equal to at least 25 percent of the grant amount
received.

Estimated Range of awards is $140,877 to $281,754, and estimated average
size of awards is $189,032 (over a 3 year period). Proposals are due May 29.
