*1)* The new *Faculty Scholars Program* from Howard Hughes Medical
Institute (HHMI), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Simons
Foundation funds early career faculty in the biological sciences. From the
Program Announcement (
http://www.hhmi.org/programs/biomedical-research/faculty-scholars):

This competition will strengthen the community of basic researchers and
physician scientists who bring innovative approaches to the study of
biological problems. Scholars will apply molecular, genetic, computational
and theoretical approaches to fundamental problems in diverse areas of
biology. Those conducting research at the interface of the biological and
physical sciences are especially encouraged to apply as are physician
scientists and others studying biological questions emerging from and
applicable to global human health problems, including malaria,
tuberculosis, HIV, and other diseases that disproportionately affect
individuals living in low resource settings. Clinical trials and research
on health education, health care delivery, or health services are not
eligible fields. Women and minorities under-represented in the biomedical
and biological sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.

Awards provide up to $400,000/year for five years. Proposals are due July
28.

*2) VentureWell* provides funding to promote student entrepreneurship and
technology transfer through efforts that lead to the formation of "E-Teams"
(multidisciplinary groups of students, faculty, and mentors working
together to bring inventions to market). Two types of grants are available
for faculty (http://venturewell.org/facultygrants/):

*Course & Program Grants* support courses or programs at the intersection
of invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship that lead to the creation
and support of E-Teams.
*Sustainable Vision Grants* must lead to the development of technology
innovations that address poverty alleviation and basic human needs.

Grants may be up to $50,000. Proposals are due May 8.

*3)* Awardees for the first round of *NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) *proposals
have been announced: http://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=134716
