*1) NSF Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering
(REESE):* The National Science Foundation has released a revised
solicitation for its REESE program (
http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?WT.z_pims_id=13667&ods_key=nsf12552).
>From the program synopsis:

The Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE)
program seeks to advance research at the frontiers of STEM learning and
education, and to provide the foundational knowledge necessary to improve
STEM learning and education in current and emerging learning contexts, both
formal and informal, from childhood through adulthood, for all groups, and
from before school through to graduate school and beyond into the
workforce. The goals of the REESE program are: (1) to catalyze discovery
and innovation at the frontiers of STEM learning and education; (2) to
stimulate the field to produce high quality and robust research results
through the progress of theory, method, and human resources; and (3) to
coordinate and transform advances in education and learning research. In
coordination with the Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE)
and Research on Disabilities Education (RDE) programs, REESE supports
research on broadening participation in STEM education. REESE pursues its
mission by developing an interdisciplinary research portfolio focusing on
core scientific questions about STEM learning; it welcomes Fostering
Interdisciplinary Research on Education (FIRE) projects, previously called
for in a separate solicitation. REESE places particular importance upon the
involvement of young investigators in the projects, at doctoral,
postdoctoral, and early career stages, as well as the involvement of STEM
disciplinary experts. Research questions related to educational research
methodology and measurement are also central to REESE activities.

The solicitation describes nine topical research strands:
*1. Neural bases of STEM learning *
***2. Cognitive underpinnings of STEM learning *
***3. STEM learning in formal and informal settings ***
*4. Learning technologies *
*5. Research on Diffusion*
***6. Methods, models, and measures for STEM education and learning
research *
***7. Secondary analysis of large datasets *
***8. Broadening participation research *

Three types of proposals can be submitted:
1. Synthesis proposals
2. Empirical Research proposals
3. *Fostering Interdisciplinary Research in Education (FIRE) proposals*

Proposals are due July 17. Maximum award amounts vary by type of proposal:
Synthesis projects: $300,000, with duration of up to two years
Small Empirical: $500,000, with duration of up to three years
Medium Empirical research projects: $1,500,000, with duration of up to
three years
Large Empirical research projects: $2,500,000, with duration of up to five
years
FIRE projects: $400,000, with duration of two years

2) OSU CARES/OSU Extension Grants:* OSU Extension has released the 2012 RFP
for its OSU CARES (Community Access to Resources and Educational Services)
Grants program (http://osucares.osu.edu/). From the RFP:

(OSU CARES) serves as a catalyst to activate teams of University
professionals to address anticipated critical issues that will face
Ohioans. These teams must include at least one partner from OSU Extension
and one partner from an Ohio State unit that does not currently have
faculty/staff appointments funded by OSU Extension. Through the efforts of
these teams, Ohioans will increase their understanding of key issues so
they can make decisions that positively affect their lives and their
communities. A key focus of this year's OSU CARES grants is to formalize
the partnerships between Ohio State University colleges/units and OSU
Extension to expand outreach/engagement throughout Ohio. Applicants are
strongly encouraged to use the grants to leverage a more formal partnership
between Ohio State University colleges/units and OSU Extension. We
encourage you to use this grant to support outreach/engagement partnerships
that connect the missions of the units involved. The dollars should be used
to build and support partnerships that are not dependent upon a few
individuals, but build relationships between units and integrate the
objectives of the project into the teaching, research and service missions
of each unit.

Applicants may request up to $10,000 for 12 months. Proposals are due May
15.
