Howdy!

Week 14 is our last full week of lab!

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.

Please see the Week 13 email<https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2025-March/000266.html> for notes on AAP and BLP.

NAP
This is a new one that Sarah has been working on. Students will be working in pairs. Equipment needed will be on the bench beside hood A. We’ll be using vortex mixers, which are new to gen chem. To activate the mixer, students just need to press their centrifuge tube down into the top cone. It will turn off when pressure is released. Waste is as expected, liquids and chemical solids go in the white can, rinsed plastic tubes in the blue bucket.

SCM
This one only uses distilled water, and it can be taken directly from the taps in the labs. Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for replacement burets, pipets, beakers, and pipet pumps. Restock the cart as needed.

BLP
Students that missed BLP earlier in the semester will be completing BLP. All other 1220/1620/1920H make-ups will be PKA. TAs should tell you how many people are doing a make-up so that you can provide them with the correct number of unknowns- they won’t need a whole box.

There are three unknowns per TA: one green liquid in falcon tubes, packaged solids in a black bag, and packaged solids in a clear colorless bag. You’ll also be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages.

PKA
This is essentially WST with different steps and reagent labels. This experiment is done individually. pH meters and probes will be on the bench closest to Hood A.The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the supplied white cables.

Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings.

If a student claims their pH meter is “broken”, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues. It will be available in the window for reference.

VOL
This one has A LOT of equipment and solutions. Students will be using the multimeter kits which are on the bench beside Hood A. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Emma has made a guide on what to do with these. Please read it.

The provided electrode kit is to be used for both Parts A and B. One magnetic stir bar is provided in the kit to help distinguish between iron and zinc electrodes. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes with emery paper/cloth. This should be done on the provided cover stock; the cover stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays since they only have 7 snorkels. Students should not be sanding directly on the lab bench. Doing this makes me sad :(

There’s a ton of waste for this experiment. Liquids should be discarded in the chemical waste beakers (white can). Contaminated paper, including spent emery paper, should go in the blue bucket. Spent electrodes should be collected in the canister in the window. Spent porous cups and Pasteur pipets should be discarded in the orange bucket.

Other Important Information

End of Term Termination (it’s not as scary as it sounds)
Anyone not planning to return to the prep lab after spring semester will be terminated on the day of spring commencement. Those of you that are not planning to work over the summer, but will return for fall, will be terminated at the end of the semester. Anyone that is working over the summer will be terminated at the end of the summer semester. This will be done so that we can put everyone into new positions that have a differential pay scale based on your start date. Starting pay will be $13/hr. After one calendar year students will be paid $13.50. Students top out after two calendar years, or a promotion to a lead student assistant, with a pay rate of $14.00/hr.

Spring 2025 Schedule
We will continue to follow our normal spring schedule until reading day. We will not have anyone scheduled to work on reading day, but anyone wanting hours is welcome to drop in. Our end of semester party will be on reading day, April 22nd, from 4-6pm. Everyone will be required to work a minimum of 4 hours during finals week. Details on sign-ups will come later.

Fall 2025
As mentioned in a previous message, the fall 2025 schedule is now open on Teams for everyone returning in the fall. The application for fall 2025 is also now open for anyone interested in joining our team: go.osu.edu/au25preplabapp

Please let us know if you have any questions!
