The University Energy Saving Project is installing a power feed to a large new heat recovery unit and requires a 1-1/2 hour shutdown of Main Distribution Switch MDS1.
The work will be done from 6:00 am - 7:30 am on Monday December 9th .
This date and time was selected after consultation with experimentalist faculty, the Chair's office, FOD, and the University Energy Partner.
Shutting down MDS1 will cause power loss to many systems and will create the following known impacts for the 1-1/2 hour work span:
1.) All air handlers and exhaust fans will shut off and offices, labs, and clean rooms will lose primary supply air flow and all exhaust including fume hoods.
2.) All computing assets in farm room 4175 will shut down.
3.) All, or at least most, lab overhead lighting will go out.
4.) Lab air compressor and dryer will shut off
5.) Misc Building equipment (scissor lift, glycol circulation pumps, domestic hot water circulation pumps, temperature control air compressor) will be off.
6.) Some circuits will shift to the emergency generator when a loss of power is detected and should restart within a few seconds after the automatic transfer switch activates.
(Items on generator include Liebert in 4179, emergency lighting, UPS in 4179, all elevators, Process Cooling Water pumps P9/P10, Campus Chilled Water Pumps P7/8, Heating Hot Water Pumps P5/6, and a few other minor items)
7.) Networks and computing assets in room 4179 are expected to run from UPS/Generator, but may experience bridging shutdowns from speed of UPS/generator transfers and may not all fully reboot without human interventions.
(Networks are predicted to be down for approximately 5 minutes and not for the full duration of the work outage)
Power panels that serve individual labs are fed from Main Distribution Switch 2 (MDS2) and are not part of this outage. This means power to equipment inside of labs will remain on.
It should be noted however, that the physical size of the MDS1 switch (see attached PDF), the large amperages being manipulated, and the lack of known side effects for such a maneuver present a risk factor.
Therefore, labs are encouraged to adopt a defensive posture by shutting down sensitive equipment to the extent it is practical and can be done without major consequences.
Other significant outages for the University Energy Savings Project are yet to come in early 2020 and additional messaging will follow for these events.
This is notice 1 of 3 for this power outage event.
