Climate and Diversity Committee

Dear All,

     I want to bring to your attention the formation of a new committee
within the department.  The Climate and Diversity Committee will be chaired
by Prof. Richard Furnstahl and has representation from a wide spectrum of
the physics community.  The attached document gives the initial charge to
the committee and the full membership.  I wish to thanks all the committee
members for their willingness to serve on this important committee. Dealing
with issues of workplace climate and diversity is challenging. There are
rarely easy simple answers. The formation of the committee is not the
solution; it is merely a first step. I am hopefully that the committee will
act as a forum for discussion of the challenges and a means for finding
ways to improve.  However, it must be understood that making progress in
these areas is dependent upon, and the responsibility of, all the faculty,
staff and students in the department.
