Phi Tau Sigma Research Competition – February 11, 2025
Learn more about Phi Tau Sigma student and post doc members’ research! The Second Annual Phi Tau Sigma Research Competition will culminate in a virtual competition on Tuesday February 11 at 2 PM Eastern (1 PM Central, 12 PM Mountain, 11 AM Pacific). Nineteen synopses were submitted for the competition. The 6 finalists will give a 3-minute presentation about their research and its significance to a lay audience. The students participating in the competition have presented their research at a Food Science and Technology professional meeting or conference between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2024. The project synopses of all students participating in the competition will be published in the monthly Phi Tau Sigma Newsletter, posted on the Phi Tau Sigma website, and social media.
The finalists participating in the virtual competition are:
· Jodie Allen, M.S. Efficacy of eugenol nanoemulsion in inactivating Salmonella enteritidis on broiler chicken skin to enhance product safety. (Ph.D. student, University of Connecticut)
· Rania Marie Buenavista, M.S. Production of functional navy bean protein concentrates through dry fractionation and air classification. (Ph.D. student, Kansas State University)
· Tharindu Trishan Dapana Durage, M.S. A combination of xanthan gum and L-lysine monohydrochloride solutions as a potential phosphate substitute for frozen white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) (Ph.D. student, Louisiana State University)
· Gopinath Mummaleti, M.Tech. Microplastics interactions and transformations during in vitro digestion with milk (Ph.D. Candidate, University of Georgia)
· Sandeep Paudel, B.S. Biodegradable films from alfalfa cellulose extend the shelf-life of strawberries (Ph.D. student, South Dakota State University)
· Toshifumi Udo, M.S. Impact of dynamic gastrointestinal conditions and food matrices on survival and release of encapsulated Lactobacillus Rhamnosus gg (Ph.D. student, University of Georgia)
