Two MA Scholarships Available for Studies in Iterative Poetics

Dr Jacob Edmond of the University of Otago's Department of English seeks
students with a strong honours degree in English, Chinese, or Russian
literature, or comparative literature (or another related literary, media,
or cultural studies discipline) and a background in contemporary poetry
and/or literary and cultural theory to carry out independent research on a
poet or poets using his conceptual framework of iterative poetics.

Applicants should be self-motivated and have strong research skills.
Successful applicants will work with Dr Edmond to develop and bring to
completion their MA theses, including the preparation of their research
for publication. Their work will form part of Dr Edmond's research
project "After the Original: Iterative Poetics and Global Culture,"
supported by New Zealand's premier research funding body, the Marsden Fund.

What is Iterative Poetics?

Iterative poetics is a new framework for contemporary cross-cultural
literary studies that focuses on works that involve the repetition or
reiteration of pre-existing materials through techniques such as
translation, performance, archiving, and sampling. Iterative works might
include (but are not restricted to) printed texts, electronic poetry,
concrete/visual poetry, sound poetry, performance poetry, and video art.
Research in this area addresses questions in the fields of contemporary
poetry, comparative literature, digital culture, and globalization studies.

Twelve-Month Scholarships

The MA scholarship provides a NZ $16000 stipend for one year plus NZ $5000
towards fees.

How to Apply

Candidates should send a CV, a writing sample, and a brief research
proposal outlining the proposed topic (including a bibliography) to
jacob.edmond at otago.ac.nz before the deadline has now been extended to
Tuesday, 6 December.
Successful candidates will be notified in December and be expected to take
up the scholarships between 1 January and 1 October 2012 (the scholarship
runs for one year from the selected start date).
