Tylka Co-Authors Book on Healthy Eating in Schools
In light of the prevalence of media attention and school concern over both childhood obesity and eating disorders, Ohio State Marion associate professor Dr. Tracy Tylka recently co-authored a book on the subject entitled, Healthy Eating in Schools: Evidence-Based Interventions to Help Kids Thrive.
A noted researcher and international expert on body image and eating behavior, Tylka co-authored Healthy Eating in Schools with Catherine P. Cook-Cottone, PhD and Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD. The book calls upon the expertise of the three authors and looks at an empirically-based "conceptual model" for understanding child eating problems. This model serves as a guide to implement more effective programs in schools that foster physical and psychological health via "body acceptance and intuitive eating — a flexible, healthy eating behavior involving awareness of the body's hunger and satiety cues."
The book is scheduled to be released April 15, 2013 and is being published by the American Psychological Association. To learn more or order a copy of the book visit, the American Psychology Association website: http://www.apa.org/pubs/books/4317303.aspx.

Be Prepared, Stay Safe
A message from Sergeant Ron Kuszmaul, Marion Campus Public Safety Supervisor
As we are all aware, there has been an increase in recent months in active shooter incidents involving elementary and secondary schools, and also colleges and universities. A recently as yesterday there were two more shooting incidents. One was at the Stevens Institute of Business & Art in St. Louis and one at the Hazard Community and Technical College campus in Hazard, Kentucky. It is important that everyone have some idea of how to react should an active shooter come onto the Marion Campus. Unfortunately, most people have little or no training on what to do. I will continue to work on giving you the best information available on how to remain safe while on campus or even off campus should you be faced with an active shooter situation. Please take some time to watch the following video. The video is a little over five minutes long. Some of you may have seen it in some classes I have spoken to, but if not I think you will find the five minutes it takes to watch this will be time well spent. Please click on this following link to view the video.
>>> http://youtu.be/5VcSwejU2D0. If you would like more training or have question on what to do in an active shooter situation, please let me know.
Parking Issues on Campus: Violators Face Stiff Fines & Court Date
Over the past few weeks the Marion Campus Public Safety Office has been inundated with complaints from campus staff and students about students parking in visitor and handicap areas. Several citations have been written in the past few weeks. Two students were issued four tickets in the past month and a half…both were advised any subsequent violations will result in their vehicle being towed and impounded at their expense. The number complaints received requires our campus officer to spend much of my time writing parking tickets, which takes away from other important duties. To that end, some new parking rules have been instituted.
If you are parked in a handicap parking area and you are not permitted to park there I will no longer issue a $25 “campus” parking ticket. You will now be issued a $250 ticket and will be required to appear in Marion Municipal Court. If you are parking using another person’s handicap tag, the tag will be confiscated. Please allow those who really need these spaces to use them. Third violations of ANY parking rules will result in your vehicle being towed at YOUR expense. You will also be charged in Marion Municipal Court with the following violation:
4511.681 Parking on private property - prohibited acts.
(A) If an owner of private property posts on the property, in a conspicuous manner, a prohibition against parking on the property or conditions and regulations under which parking is permitted, no person shall do either of the following:
(1) Park a vehicle on the property without the owner’s consent;
(2) Park a vehicle on the property in violation of any condition or regulation posted by the owner.
(B) Whoever violates this section is guilty of a minor misdemeanor.
Please remember once you are registered as a student you may not park in the visitor parking…even to drop off a paper or see an advisor.
It is the goal of Marion Technical College and Ohio State Marion to make their campuses welcoming to visitors. This is very difficult if visitors cannot park where they are allowed because students are using the parking spaces designated for visitors. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sergeant Ron Kuszmaul at kuszmaul.2 at osu.edu<mailto:kuszmaul.2 at osu.edu>.

Confronting Plagiarism Workshop on Campus (Faculty & Staff Only Event)
"Confronting students who plagiarize work can be a very frustrating affair. The ubiquity of copy-and-pasteable information on the internet makes it easy for students to ignore their ethical responsibilities in academic research and writing. In this session, we will explore strategies that make it difficult for students to plagiarize and, more importantly, help them better understand ethical research and writing in various disciplines."

Science Café February Discusses Women in Ohio’s Prisons
Science Café is free and open to the campus community and the public
Brenda Chaney from the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University will present Women in Ohio's Prisons at the next Science Café, Tuesday, February 5, 7 p.m., at the Infinity Restaurant in Downtown Marion’s historic Harding Hotel. How is the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW) meeting the needs of incarcerated women? Researchers in the 1960s and 1970s concluded that “pastel fascism” described the atmosphere of women’s institutions. Rather than encouraging independence, the goal was to make incarcerated women easy to control. The role of women in our society has changed since the 1960s and the societal problems that send women to prison have also changed. The challenge facing ORW is to identify those problems and to then provide programming that will give the women the opportunity to learn the skills needed to leave the prison as independent, contributing members of their communities. We will discuss the options for change available at ORW, including education, job training, alcohol and drug addiction treatment, mental health services, and community service programming.
