[Heb-NACO] correct transcription for "alif" and "ayin" diacritics

I am involved in updating the Hebraica Cataloging RDA manual, and I have added a note about using the “w” key to for Geresh and Gershayim in the Hebraica Cataloging RDA, under the section on geresh. However, this version of the Manual will not be publicly available for some time yet, so we should probably document this somewhere in the AJL cataloging Wiki.

I agree with Neil regarding the use of the "w" key for Geresh or Gershayim:
The problem with using the Quotation mark >"< for Gershayim in Hebrew script is the data base we are using (OCLC):
OCLC considers the Quotation mark as an empty space: so, for example the abbreviation צה"ל will display as צה ל and one will not be able to search for צהל. And so for all abbreviations. The usage of the "w" key solves the problem. Because OCLC does not consider it as a empty space and collapses the letters that are on the two sides of the Geresh (or two Gereshes) to one word.
The Israeli Aleph system is using the Quotation mark, but they defined it the same as the Geresh and collapses the string to one word.
If you search for תרפ"ט you will do it as תרפט .
I hope it makes sense to use two Gereshes for Gershayim, and it probably needs to be written somewhere for future reference.

The "w" key is actually for a geresh, though I concede that hitting it twice will render gershayim. I don't think we have any explicit direction with regard to geresh-key twice or quotation marks. So far as I know, the only difference between the two approaches is that the former requires two characters while the latter uses a single character. There may be other, finer differences out and about.
It would be nice if we were all on the same page, and I happily profess agnosticism with regard to the two choices.

A quick reminder of shortcuts for these:
Alif -- CTRL + ALT + dot
Ayin -- CTRL + ALT + 0
Dot below -- CTRL + ALT + R
Acute for Sin CTRL + ALT + B
Also, please remember that the gershayim for abbreviations are the Hebrew key under W, not the quotation marks.

Hi all,
I have received a few reports that some catalogers creating or modifying Hebraica bibliographic and authority records have been using keyboard apostrophe characters in lieu of the diacritics for alef and ayin.
The easiest way to prevent this while working in OCLC is to use the diacritics table under the Edit tab. You can set a particular language to display only those diacritics and special characters to that language.
Thank you in advance for heeding this request.
