<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p>I agree with Neil regarding the use of the "w" key for Geresh or Gershayim:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>The problem with using the Quotation mark >"< for Gershayim in Hebrew script is the data base we are using (OCLC):<br>
OCLC considers the Quotation mark as an empty space: so, for example the abbreviation
<span lang="HE" dir="RTL">צה</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span>"<span lang="HE" dir="RTL">ל</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span> will display as
<span lang="HE" dir="RTL">צה ל</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span> and one will not be able to search for
<span lang="HE" dir="RTL">צהל</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span>. And so for all abbreviations. The usage of the "w" key solves the problem. Because OCLC does not consider it as a empty space and collapses the letters that are on the two
sides of the Geresh (or two Gereshes) to one word.<br>
The Israeli Aleph system is using the Quotation mark, but they defined it the same as the Geresh and collapses the string to one word.<br>
If you search for <span lang="HE" dir="RTL">תרפ</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span>"<span lang="HE" dir="RTL">ט</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span> you will do it as
<span lang="HE" dir="RTL">תרפט</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span> .<br>
I hope it makes sense to use two Gereshes for Gershayim, and it probably needs to be written somewhere for future reference.
