Dear Miriam,

I agree with you that the addition of a date s very useful, and if a date of birth/death is available, is required for for newly created NARs. I looked at the first NAR that you are citing

and there is no information found in the 670 offering a date of birth or death. The creator of the NAR could have recorded a series of 675s to indicate that they tried to find a date of birth or death; that would only be required if the heading conflicted with another heading or xreference in a different NAR. In this case there was not conflict so the creator of the NAR was perfectly in compliance with the rules. Differentiating between two identitcal xrefs is not required so this NAR is perfectly okay.

However, you may certainly take the time when you encounter this situation (and in the case of this NAR) to look for birth and dates and add them to the xref Amdor Shelita if you find them. In the case of the first example the dates are readily in both OCLC and Viḳipedyah (https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A9%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%90%D7%9C_%D7%A6%D7%91%D7%99_%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%91%D7%99%D7%A5).

If you decide to modify the NAR I will look forward to taking a look at it.

I agree with you that the xreference in the 2nd example "Sheliṭa, Admor (active 2014), while probably not technically wrong does not make much sense.

Best, Heidi

Subject: [Heb-NACO] Admor Shelita as a cross reference for Hassidic Rebbes

The term Admor Shelita אדמו"ר שליט"א (Adoni, mori v.e-rabi she-yih.yeh le-orekh yamim t.ovim amen --
my master, teacher, and Rabbi, he should live to the length of good days amen)
is kind of like saying his excellency, or his holiness -- it is an honorific typically used for Hassidic Rebbes. In some cases it is used somewhat correctly as Admor of a place/Congregation
but even in those cases, it probably should have dates because Hassidic groups/communities are dynastic so that there are 1) often several generations of Admor mi-(name the city) 2) in some cases like Satmar, Bobov, Vizhnitz, there are splits, -- so that there are 2 Admor mi-(name the group) at a time writing about the same subject!

Below are a few examples of usage with and without a date. In the second record Shelita $c Admor makes absolutely no sense.
