[Heb-NACO] Trouble in the forest

Hi Bob,
I think that you are recommending the correct modification to the record. In the first place neither a "śin" or a "shin" is represented by an "s" in systematic ALA/LC romanization. This makes the existing xref incorrectly formulated above and beyond the lack of a space between the initials. The number of references that appear in a NAR are cataloger's judgement. In this case, the middle initial S. in the romanized form found on the resource does not tell us whether or not the middle name begins with an "Sh." or not, so it is very helpful to provide both the cross-references that you recommend and remove the 1st cross-reference since it is incorrect. You can also fix the punctuation of the initials in the heading and xrefs. Please also fix the mistake in the 670 and the punctuation of the initials in the heading and xrefs.

Best, Heidi

Good people of the Hebrew Name Authority Funnel!

So, I ran across the below name authority:

1001 Gvirtzman, I.S.
4001 Gevirtsman, I.S.
4001 ‏גבירצמן, א.ש.
667 Non-Latin script reference not evaluated
670 Ḥolah ʻal ʻakhbarim, 2012: ǂb title page (I.S. Gevirtsman = א.ש. גבירצמן) page facing title page (I.S. Gvirtzman [romanized])

This is causing me some issues. Yes, I know, there should be a space between initials, but that's just a garden variety error and causes no anxiety. The rendering of the shin, however, is troubling.

The way I read the guidelines for Romanization, a "shin" is Sh and a "sin" is [acute]S. The t.p. verso provides an S, but really, that doesn't help to narrow it down. The patent-pending "Bob Talbott method" for dealing the Romanized x-refs would have been as follows:

4001# Gevirtsman, I. Sh.
4001# Gevirtsman, I. [acute]S.

... unless I'm missing something. Am I missing something? It's happened before, there's no denying.

So: is the record correct as is? If so, why?

Thanks in advance

Bob
