OCTOBER 2021
PUBLICATIONS AND CONFERENCE PAPERS
* PhD student Harsh Shah's article "What is your shopping travel style? Heterogeneity in U.S. households' online shopping and travel" (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2021.08.013) was published in Transportation Research Part A. Harsh's research analyzes a national-level travel survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation to identify various segments of the population that differ in their online shopping and shopping travel behavior. Harsh is advised by Andre Carrel.
With the rapid growth of online shopping, which was further fueled by the pandemic, it is becoming increasingly critical to understand the effect that online shopping has on travel behavior. Such an understanding can serve as a basis for long-range transportation planning and policymaking to mitigate potential sustainability impacts of online shopping. This research was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Huyen T.K. Le from the Department of Geography.
* Karen Dannemiller and collaborators recently published a pair of papers that examined VOC emissions from building materials. The first, "Microbial growth and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from carpet and drywall under elevated relative humidity conditions" (https://microbiomejournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40168-021-01158-y), showed that RH cycling indoors led to higher VOPC emission rates than constant RH.
The second paper, "Varying humidity increases emission of volatile nitrogen-containing compounds from building materials" (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360132321006892), demonstrated that VOC emissions from microbes are generally lower in concentration than those from the materials themselves, but contain more sulfur-based compounds and contribute more to odors.
This work has important implications for understanding chemicals in our environment, which generally experiences variations in RH. Microbes may be hard to detect via total VOC measurements, even if they contribute more to negative smells.
Among Karen's collaborators was Sarah Haines, former researcher in Ohio State's Indoor Environmental Quality Laboratory and current assistant professor in the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto.
Ethan Kubatko, with former graduate students Ben Yeager (currently a postdoc at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU) and Dylan Wood (currently a postdoc at the University of Notre Dame), published a paper "Time Step Restrictions for Strong-Stability-Preserving Multistep Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin Methods" in the Journal of Scientific Computing (https://www.sciencegate.app/document/10.1007/s10915-021-01635-4).
PRESENTATIONS AND FORUMS
* Research conducted by Jeffrey Bielicki was presented to the National Academy of Engineering during its annual meeting on.
Professor Catherine Peters, Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Princeton University, was invited to
speak about advances in CO2 storage and utilization. On October 3, 2021, Peters presented some of Jeff's work on subsurface
energy storage using CO2.

GRANTS AND AWARDS
* Professor of Practice and Associate Dean of Facilities Michael Hagenberger and Assistant Professor Jordan Clark are part of an
Interdisciplinary team at Ohio State that received a $4.2 million Department of Energy grant to transform the way the campus community
uses energy. In partnership with Ohio State Energy Partners, the project has embarked on a transformation of Ohio State's Columbus
campus. To date, the installation of nearly 1,000 smart meters, approval of more than $190 million in energy efficiency measures and the implantation of central controls and analytics have resulted in Ohio State's 485 building Columbus campus becoming the largest microgrid in the U.S.
The project team includes Ohio State faculty and staff, ENGIE, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, The University of California, Berkeley, American Electric Power and PJM. Ohio State Facilities Operations and Development, Office of Business and Finance,
Center for Automotive Research, Sustainability Institute, John Glenn College of Public Affairs and the Institute for Materials Research
will also contribute to the project.
* Professor Alper Yilmaz and Dr. Deepak Gulati, Department of Neurology, received a pilot grant from The Ohio State University Center for Medical and Engineering Innovation. The duo are developing a deep learning approach for automated classification of intracranial hemorrhages that can be used in hospital emergency departments.
TEACHING INITIATIVES
* CEGE students enrolled in surveying classes (CIVILEN 2410 and CIVILEN 5410) are utilizing new, cutting edge, Robotic Total Stations supplied by Topcon. Senior Lecturer Eblal Zakzok stated that students' use of this new equipment during class instruction and lab work, in cooperation with Topcon, is expected to make CEGE students more marketable as they enter industry.
