Quick Note: Manual, Notebook and Notebook submission

This week we have our first real experiment.

In the discussion below when I state "iPad" you can use other tablet computers
(like MS Surface Pro), as long as they can produce a PDF for submission.
We supply a Ziploc baggie for the iPads. This is to protect them from chemicals.
You are NOT allowed to use your Apple pencils in the lab.

Do NOT bring laptops to lab.

You can not use cell phones in lab, unless the TA gives you express permission
to do so. If they do and we see you using it for anything other than lab you will
lose points for the lab.

Lab Manual:

You need to have the latest lab manual. It is a digital format as explained in the syllabus
and elsewhere. You can of course view it on your iPad in lab. If you don't have an iPad
you can print the manual pages and bring those to lab. The digital version allows you to
print a limited number of pages, supposedly enough to print the procedure pages.

Technically, you shouldn't need your lab manual in lab. You should be able to do the whole
exp from your properly prepared notebook. Anyone should be able to walk into lab and do
the whole experiment from your notebook.

Notebook:

Do NOT use your manual pages for your notebook, even if your manual pages on your iPad
can be written on. If using Notability on your iPad use it as if it's a paper notebook or a spiral
notebook on which you write with a PEN. You MUST use BLACK or BLUE ink.

If you don't have a university supplied iPad you can use your own. You don't have to use
Notability as long as what you're using can produce a PDF.

You can use an actual paper notebook or just a regular notebook. Then take pictures of it
and combine them into a PDF and submit this.

When you prepare the notebook before lab you can type in the procedure (if using an iPad) or
write if using a spiral notebook. It should be in your own words in an outline form.

In lab treat this as if it's a paper lab notebook with carbons and write in your numbers and
observations. Don't type them in if using an iPad. I want you to treat this as if it's a real notebook.
If you make a mistake do NOT use "Undo" or erase. When you make mistakes you don't erase
them or scribble them out in a real notebook, you put a single line through the mistake and write
the correct value next to it. Do this on your digital lab notebook.

ALL data and observations go directly in your notebook and no where else, even if you
intend to eventually transfer it to the notebook. You lose points if you write data anywhere
other than your notebook.

You can use your finger if using an iPad.

Notebook Submission:

Before leaving lab you need to upload your notebook pages to Carmen. If you look in the
"Laboratory" module and find the "Lab Zero (Check-In, ZER)" submodule. Below that you'll
see another module "Notebook Submission: Scientific Measurements (exp 1 SCM).
Use this to upload your notebook pages. I noticed for Lab Zero (Check-In, ZER) a few
people uploaded their notebook pages to the "Lab Zero (Check-In, ZER)" module which is
for the Lab Zero Notebook Exercise. The upload there is for the Notebook Exercise. If you
upload your notebook pages to the wrong location you will need to upload them again
to the proper link. If that makes them late you won't get credit.

It MUST be a PDF file. It will not accept any other files. There's also a naming convention
you must use. This is in the syllabus. If you don't use the correct file naming convention for
the notebook or reports you will lose points. If you realize you didn't use the correct file naming
convention you can resubmit. Carmen will automatically add a number to the file name when
you resubmit. You can't control that so don't worry about it.

Do NOT worry if you made mistakes with these things for lab ZER as the notebook itself was
not for credit but for practice. Your notebook points came from the Notebook Exercise. The
link to this was in the Lab Zero submodule in the "Laboratory" module. You can find the same
link in the syllabus (page 17). Hopefully you found this since it is due this week.
