The semester starts on Tuesday, 6/8/21. We don't have lecture until Wed. We do have
lab and recitations on Tue.
I will be holding a voluntary session starting at 3:00 PM. This was listed as 3:15 PM
in the Welcome e-mail. Since writing the e-mail I learned you will not likely be in lab on
Tue, 6/8, the whole time so I moved it up to 3:00 PM. That's the time listed for the Zoom
meeting.
I will go over how to study and the best approach to this course (especially during
summer semester) and answer other questions you may have.
The "How to Study" part will take about an hour. Plan on being there if you can, as I
think it will be helpful. To that end here's more info you might want to look at before
coming. This isn't required and I will record it (as long as I remember to). Even so I
think is better to attend.
I suggest you look at my home page for two important links:
Studying Methods - 1220<https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/zellmer.1/studying/studying_1220.txt>
and
Some Ways College and High School are Different<https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/zellmer.1/studying/college_highsc.pdf>
Both will be very helpful. This class moves quickly and is very
different than most high school classes and even those you may
have had so far in college. Studying for this class is different
than what you may have had to do for most of your other classes,
even 1210. Please read the material in the above links and pay
close attention to what is stated there and in my original e-mail. Due
to the speed of the class you may actually have to put in about 24-30
hours outside of class for the lecture material. Also, don't forget
you will need to spend 6-8 hours for lab prep and lab associated
activities. This is a lot of time but remember, we're essentially
covering two weeks of material every week. This is just an
estimate and you should plan for it. It may not take this much
time but at least you've planned for it.
Also, do you want to get some more guidance on how to learn?
I have the link above but sometimes it's better to hear things
and get some specifics. I will be holding a "How to Learn/Study"
session in Zoom. In the past I waited until after the first exam. I
now do this at the start of the semester since it can make a big
difference for many people. Even if you did well in high school
chemistry, or even 1210, this course is very different in terms of
the depth of understanding expected. Students often tell me
afterwards it helped them in terms of time management and
overall reduces the time they have to spend and still learn the
material. Some students will spend 25 or more hours per week
in a normal semester and still not do well because they don't work
efficiently.
I strongly suggest you come to this. It's certainly up to you
whether or not to come. I will be there. This will be held at the
following day/time (with associated Zoom link, which can also
be accessed in Carmen):
