We all knew that VW loved Montaigne. Hélène Cixous calls him "the French
equivalent of Shakespeare" (for literature, but also philosophy, politics &
sociology).
I did not know until today that Leonard Woolf too also knew & appreciated
Montaigne: "le premier homme complètement moderne". Montaigne speaks for
All people(s).

As a Renaissance man, Montaigne continues to gain aficionados today,
creating passions even amongst young souls. A quintessential humanist, he
inspires artists, philosophers and common readers alike to continue to
believe in humanity.

Hope some of you will be inspired to discover or (re)read too, whether in
(old) French, newer French or English. I had a passion for Montaigne in
high school, and totally understand how VW herself became enthralled with
this intelligence.

Would love to find the time to take a deep plunge into VW reading
Montaigne... hopefully someone will take the hint?
