[Vwoolf] Mark Hussey's reservations about the digitalization of archives

Hi,

Commiserations, but as far as I know there’s no way to coerce a rights-holder.  When I arrived at the University of Newcastle 28 years ago (I’ve since retired), a colleague there had just had the horrible experience of Australian poet Gerald Murnane refusing permission for him to quote Murnane’s work—after my colleague had written a (very positive) full-length monograph on it.  This effectively killed the project.

Disclaimer: I may have details wrong, but that’s how I remember the story.

One major collected edition of a twentieth-century author is lacking at least one volume because the owner of preprint material refuses to grant persmission to editors to use it or even to see it.

But all this is very useful info nonetheless (& thanks, Helen, for alerting people to the French scholars’ book on the Reading Notebooks, which is a superb example of how what is on Michele Barrett’s recently-launched site can be used.) I am going to be using this image of LW and VW in my forthcoming book. The source is The LIFE Picture Collection. But, I am curious where it originally appeared. Time magazine? It looks to me like a much earlier photograph from the one that appeared on the cover of Time.

Just wondering if anyone knows where it first appeared.
