" how to deal with obtaining permissions from rights holders who are intransigent or impervious to reasonable arguments about scholarly uses versus commercial ones". If the holder refuses permission there is not much you can do. One major collected edition of a twentieth-century author is lacking at least one volume because the owner of preprint material refuses to grant persmission to editors to use it or even to see it.

Getting lost, however, is what I understood to be the initiating issue, i.e. how to deal with obtaining permissions from rights holders who are intransigent or impervious to reasonable arguments about scholarly uses versus commercial ones. But all this is very useful info nonetheless (& thanks, Helen, for alerting people to the French scholars’ book on the Reading Notebooks, which is a superb example of how what is on Michele Barrett’s recently-launched site can be used.) I am going to be using this image of LW and VW in my forthcoming book. The source is The LIFE Picture Collection. But, I am curious where it originally appeared. Time magazine? It looks to me like a much earlier photograph from the one that appeared on the cover of Time.



Just wondering if anyone knows where it first appeared.
