If you enjoy next week’s readings and discussion, you might be excited for this course over in T&L:

EDUTL 8890 Language Mixing, Translanguaging & Multilingualism in Language Education

There has been an increasing interest amongst researchers in applied linguistics and language education on understanding language learning and teaching through a multilingual perspective. One of the most important conceptual innovations in the field in recent years has been translanguaging, which is the process of sense-making of bilingual individuals. This course explores the theoretical development of language mixing from a sociolinguistic perspective, looking at earlier work on code-switching and the role of L1 and linguistic repertoires in language classrooms. It explores how translanguaging work is part of the “bilingual turn” or “languaging turn” in applied linguistics, and considers the theoretical and practical implications of translanguaging in relation to issues of identity, ideology, pedagogy, and language acquisition.
Thursdays, 4:30-6:50, in person
Instructor: Peter Sayer, sayer.32
