[Pond-management-news] Another virtual pond clinic and an interesting new article

Greetings, my limnological chums. I have a few quick words for you.

1. Lucas County is hosting a virtual pond clinic at 6:30 pm on September 29th. The disadvantage of the virtual pond clinic is the human interaction with the plastic box that is your internet-connected device is of a different quality than in person (especially when in person is in the presence of food taken in a social setting). The advantage is that you can attend from absolutely anyplace you have an internet connection, hours of travel not required. I'll be giving my talk on top 5 pond enquiries for Lucas SWCD. If you've seen that particular talk before, you won't see much new here. If you haven't (or even if you already have), please feel free to join in and ask your own pond-management questions to follow. You can register here: https://www.lucasswcd.org/pond-clinic.html. I look forward to interacting with pictures of you all as broadcast to a plastic screen on the 29th!

2. Ohio State's Stone Laboratory has a new Assistant Director, Dr. Brian Alford. Kindred spirits, Brian and his wife Amy both have some interesting background in fisheries management. Tennessee Extension recently published the attached fact sheet. When researchers take the time to look for it, microplastics are appearing in more larval fish diets where it's feared there may be negative consequences (e.g., a larval Largemouth Bass that eats a plastic particle certainly won't grow as well as if it had filled its gut with a nutritious waterflea instead). There is concern that the physical abrasion of plastic fish-attracting structures in ponds may result in microplastic particles that come to be ingested by a pond's fish. Check it out (attached).

3. Don't forget, don't call my office while COVID finds me exiled from campus. If you'd like to discuss issues related to the management of your own pond or lake (or whatever related to aquatic habitats, fish, fishes, fishing, or fisheries), please feel free to log on to my Tuesday afternoon virtual "office" hours, details here: https://senr.osu.edu/extensionoutreach/ponds-fisheries-aquatics/open-pond-clinic-zoom.

And, as always, be well out there.

Best,
Eugene
