REMINDER: Service-Learning Coffee Hour this Friday: To promote service-learning scholarship at Ohio State it is vital for us to engage with colleagues on the national level. The Service-Learning Initiative coffee hour in March will encourage research and scholarship. Come learn from past attendees and presenters at the National Outreach Scholarship Conference (NOSC) and the International Association of Researchers for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (IARSLCE). Nominate a Colleague for the 2012 Ohio State Service Awards The Service-Learning Initiative is currently seeking nominees for the 2012 Ohio State Service Awards. These awards will recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of service-learning and civic engagement in the Ohio State community. Don't miss this opportunity to recognize exemplary students, faculty, staff, student organizations, and community partners. 2012 Service-Learning Grants Program to release RFP in April The Service-Learning Initiative is preparing to announce an RFP for grants related to service-learning course development and student philanthropy. A formal announcement with full criteria and other details is planned for the beginning of April, with a tentative due date for proposals set on May 21st. Please watch this space for more details.

Graduate Assistant Position: Digital Storytelling in the Hilltop  This person will work with Dr. Dickie Selfe to promote and manage stories from the Hilltop area, set up intergenerational digital media workshops using grant funded equipment at the Hilltop Branch library, and transcribe and archive stories. Call for Participation: Emerging Engagement Scholars Workshop at NOSC 2012 This intensive professional development program provides advanced doctoral students and early career faculty with background literature, facilitated discussion, mentoring, and presentations designed to increase their knowledge and enhance their practice of community engaged scholarship. Participation is limited and interested applicants must be nominated to be part of this workshop. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the 2012 National Outreach Scholarship Conference September 30-October 3 at the University of Alabama. Deadline to apply is Friday, March 30th. UNC-Charlotte Revises Tenure Guidelines to Recognize Community Engagement UNC-C has been highlighted by Inside Higher Ed for its efforts to integrate faculty efforts in civic engagement and service-learning into their tenure process. According to new guidelines being considered, "community engagement could qualify for any of the three existing categories for promotion and tenure -- research, teaching or service -- based on how faculty members defined their work." The article discusses the rationale behind the proposed guidelines, and some of the benefits and roadblocks associated with passing them. Design Matters Open House on 03/15 Susan Melsop's Design Matters course will be holding an open house at Central Community House (1150 Main St, Columbus OH) this Thursday from 6-8pm. Come see designs created in partnership with TRANSIT ARTS students to create community spaces and solutions on the near East side. Refreshments will be provided.
