[Ohiogift] IB (Diploma) vs AP

I went through the IB program myself in high school. I am also an 8th grade English teacher now. I found the program was limiting if you had other interests in electives--newspaper, speech/debate, etc., yet it was considered the superior program. Therefore, I got IB certificates in certain subjects instead of the entire Diploma. This was in Missouri, but if this is an option in your district, it worked out great for me. By sitting for the IB exams in my subjects and receiving certain scores, along with a few other college credit classes, I was able to enter an Ohio institution as a second semester sophomore. This amount of credit hours was not possible through similar scores on the AP test. My college held IB on a higher platform than AP. Long story short, I would look at some possible colleges and see what they are offering for each.

Hi, I am also a lurker but a parent.
My understanding is it depends to some extent on the particular program (so investigate your particular option).
>From what I can tell, many of the IB programs are very heavy on the essay writing (even in non language arts classes!) which makes me reluctant to consider it for my STEM kid.
The other thing that I hear from other parents is that the APs are more compartmentalized with a la carte options whereas IB tends to be all or none with a not very scale-able workload (whereas you can choose how many AP classes to take each year).
Finally, although IB appears to be gaining more acceptance it seems APs are more widely known and accepted in this country.
I have zero personal experience with IBs but thought I would pass along what I have filtered / gathered from other forums and other parents.

Hi - I lurk around on this listserve also but don't often comment. I guess it depends on what your son is looking to get out of the experience. I'm an IB coordinator at an elementary school, so I am familiar with the program but only slightly familiar with the high school version (Diploma Program). If your son wants college credits out of the way, then he probably wants to go with AP because from what I've heard colleges are more likely to accept it.
IB is kind of like liberal arts. Its good for gifted kids conceptually but may not be as good for a kid into the hard sciences. I hope this info helps.

Hello everyone:
I’ve been lurking for years and appreciate all the information this group has provided. Now I have a question of my own. If I have a son who is interested in Engineering and is identified as gifted, should we consider the IB program or
the AP program for his high school years. He is currently in 8th grade.

Thank you and I appreciate all your feedback!
