[Ohiogift] CogAT, Forms 6 and 7 Question

I understand what you're saying. The March, 2012 Factsheet #001 is the most
recent one I have found, as listed on the ODE website. If anyone knows
differently, please do let me know.

Here's a scenario that prompted my initial question. . .

Suzie Q--a 2nd grader--was administered the CogAT, Form 6, in October, 2011.
Her composite SAS was a 127, which, under the January, 2011 Factsheet #001
guidelines, would ID her as superior cognitive. If Suzie had been a 2nd
grader in October, 2012, she would have had to receive an SAS of 128 on the
same normed assessment - CogAT, Form 6 for superior cognitive
identification. Why would the cut score change using the same normed
assessment? I'm trying to logically understand this. I might have to contact
the ODE on this one.

Thank you,

Chip

I am not sure. However, I would advise you to get rid of both of those fact
sheets and rely on the current ones. (Although, I will tell you know that
CogAT 7's cut score will be different for the lowest grade band on the one
yet to come out because the SEM was different from Form 6 to Form 7. One of
them had a different cut score for K-2 as compared to 3-12 due to SEM, and
the other has a different score for K-1 as compared to 2-12 due to SEM.
That grade band issue was not caught when Form 7 was added. Then again,
that is why ODE has the caveat that you should always rely on the technical
manuals to confirm the cut scores.) Not only are the cut scores current on
the most recent sheet, but it also limits the list to the current approved
instruments. Form 6 can no longer be used for gifted identification, as it
came off last June, I believe, because it is outdated. ODE typically
releases current approved test lists and fact sheets in December or January
(new ones for this year are forthcoming - they got a little behind with
staff changes in the department), so always replace your existing lists with
the new ones.

Hi, all:

I need some assistance understanding something, please. . .

On the January, 2011 Gifted Education Factsheet #001, it states that a
CogAT, Form 6, SAS of 127, for K-2, identifies a student as superior
cognitive. The March, 2012 revised Factsheet #001 changes that cutoff to an
SAS of 128 for K-2 students. Why would the cutoff have changed from 2011 to
2012? Since the CogAT is a normed assessment, I'm trying to understand the
change. I also noticed that this occurred when the ODE accepted the new
CogAT, Form 7, as an approved instrument; it has an SAS cutoff of 127 for
K-2, while Form 6 has a 128. How could the norms have changed when applied
to the same assessment (i.e., Form 6)?

Thank you for your help,

Chip
