The Financial Capabilities Group of the Boston Fed's Regional & Community Outreach department is pleased to introduce a resource handbook designed for community college personnel, potential partners and supporters with an interest in empowering students to better manage their financial lives. We see this work as critical to helping students navigate financial decisions they may face presently as well as those that could affect their prospects for future financial wellness.

View the handbook on BostonFed.org:
Promoting Pathways to Financial Stability: A Resource Handbook on Building Financial Capabilities of Community College Students<http://www.bostonfed.org/education/financial-capabilities/handbook/index.htm?wt.source=rco_fincaphandbook_ohiost_outreach>.

The Handbook describes financial capabilities and ways to build them among students, and it makes the case for why this work is important and valuable to both students and the institutions that serve them. Some highlights include:

*             Most community colleges in New England recognize the importance and potential benefits of helping students better manage their finances;

*             Institutions we interviewed from around the country shared their different motivations for putting financial capability efforts in place ranging from concern over national trends on student loan debt levels to students struggling to manage financial aid refunds;

* Early experiences with money may influence the financial decisions students make today as well as how they apply learned money management concepts and practices; and

* Adapting a financial capability strategy to an institution will be more successful when guided by the unique context (e.g., priorities, needs of students, capacity and resources).
