Call For Papers: "Bandits, Pirates, and Outlaws in Late Imperial and Modern Chinese Literature and History"
I am seeking panelists for a 2018 MLA (New York) panel that aims to examine various rebellious characters in late imperial fiction and drama and beyond, possible images to be analyzed may include the Monkey in Journey to the West, the 108 bandit-heroes in Water Margin, and bandits and pirates that are omnipresent in Chinese fiction and history. The panel seeks papers that focus on the philosophical and religious formation of subversive images in Chinese literature, the reasons of transgression and rebellion in late imperial Chinese literature and modern literature and film, the historical narratives of rebels, the relationship between transgression and the empire/state, and the literary tropes of rebellion.
Interested scholars and students, please send a 250-word paper abstract to Yuanfei Wang at yuanfeiw at uga.edu.
