Retelling fantastic tales–cfp
Dear list members,
Please consider submitting to the following ACLA seminar (March 17-20, 2016, Harvard):
Retelling Fantastic Tales in East Asian and Global Popular Cultures
This seminar invites papers that concern themselves with the metamorphoses of folk tales in modern East Asian and global contexts. It is particularly interested in the travels of fantastic tales across historical demarcations and geographical boundaries, and how the retelling of these tales function in contemporary politics and popular culture. Possible topics include, but are not exclusive to, investigations into the relationship between fantasy and reality, and the power of fantasy in reflecting, projecting, and shaping reality; explorations on the connections between the folk and the avant-garde, or the avant-garde and the political, in the process of retelling a fantastic tale; and in particular, transnational and comparative projects focusing on contemporary popular cultural articulations of the fantastic.
Paper proposals are due 11:59 PM Pacific Time, Wed. Sept. 23 online: http://www.acla.org/node/5273.
Best regards,
