Leaving China confiscations (1,2)
I lost a Jonathan Spence book that I'd had for years. It had lived in China twice. With notes and keepsakes in it. My friends' copy (that I shipped with) arrived. Spence was in Beijing on tour when I shipped, though the speech I showed up for was apparently canceled without notice.
I also obtained a Ying-yang ball, looks like a pool ball, if someone is missing one!

======================================
The detailed attention with which the PRC customs (or some contractor) now sifts thru your belongings (physical or digital), was brought home to me last Fall when a businessman in Shanghai told of how Jung Chang's biography of empress dowager Cixi was taken from their container. (Probably because of Jung Chang's writings on Mao, mentioned as confiscated in this article?). This was without acknowledgement. And while at it, they took the piggybank of their young son, coins and all.
