How Hollywood sucks up to China (2,3,4)
Thanks to Magnus Fiskesjö for posting. But I was wondering, by "kowtowing" is he referring to the expression used by McCartney and his mission when they went to see the Qianlong emperor? I believe McCartney dealt with this problem when he noted his breeches were too tight.
As to altering films to suit the audience. The Hollywood practice of altering films for foreign audiences has been going on for some time. According to Hansen, in early Hollywood films (she is not specific here) "American happy endings were converted into tragic endings for Russian release."  (See, "Fallen Women, Rising Stars, New Horizons: Shanghai Silent Film As Vernacular Modernism" in Film Quarterly, 54.1 [Autumn, 2000]: 12). But I am not sure if there is an equivalent English-Russian expression for "kowtowing."
All the best,

My understanding was that much of what passes for Shanghai in Skyfall was in fact shot in London, partly because of budget cuts. Various buildings in the City (Broadgate Towers) and Canary Wharf (the Virgin Active Gym swimming pool) stand in for the Shanghai hotel, and I think the racing stands at Ascot act as Pudong Airport. And of course all the Macau club locations were shot on set in Pinewood.

The entire China section is pulled straight from the book, written by Andy Weir, an American programmer/space nerd (http://www.andyweirauthor.com/bios/andy-weir). I'm not sure this is Hollywood pandering to China as much as it is following the material.
