This is a very provocative but thoughtful article that challenges the dominant discourse in the western media. Hessler takes on Evan Osnos’ NYT Op-Ed but could also have mentioned Joseph Escherick’s ChinaFile piece from last year that also contributed to the debate about how much censorship western authors should accept when they publish in China:
