China sharpens its censorship blade (6)
In response to Magnus Fiskesjö’s posting (#4 in the thread):
Well said. A former colleague of mine was fond of saying that Chinese were too busy enjoying the net that they had to worry about the one they didn’t. Making access to the wild internet is just hard enough and what’s readily available is just satisfying enough that most can’t be bothered to find and use access tools.
It’s clear that this is the Chinese Communist Party aim, to make the intranet work for most and to get those outside China to adapt to Chinese censorship requirements as a cost of entry into the Chinese market. In some respects it smacks of the thinking that led to the cohong 公行 system in the Qing dynasty. It keeps up with technological change, but is powered by the same instincts.
