Novelistic treatments of the Great Leap Forward (12)
I wanted to respond to this query two weeks ago, but my MCLC list email uses gmail, and I was in China. Sorry for the delay!
Liu Zhenyun's 刘震云 BACK TO 1942 温故一九四二, written in 1992-1993 and made into a film directed by Feng Xiaogang that came out in winter 2012/2013 is not explicitly about the Great Leap famine. But it is maybe the most trenchant depiction available of conditions that made famine erupt and get worse and worse both in 1942-1943 in Henan and in 1959-1961 nationwide. The original novella is a personal investigation into famine in Henan in 1942. It is a documentary, using letters, newspaper reports and other souces, along with oral testimony from the narrator's village. The film was censored. The novella wasn't censored and is still widely available. It makes you realize there wasn‘t much difference between Chiang Kaishek and Mao Zedong, at least in some crucial aspects. My German translation came out in fall 2014.
