Search for Head of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies
It is with the greatest pleasure that we draw to your attention the opening of Headship of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  The University is now inviting applications and nominations from renowned scholars for the said Headship.  Details of the post are set out in the attached post specification and also available at http://www.polyu.edu.hk/hro/job/en/external_adv/deans-heads.php.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong with a total student count of about 32,600.  It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees.  The University has 27 academic departments and units grouped under 6 faculties, as well as 2 independent schools and 2 independent research institutes.  It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,250.  The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$5 billion (US1 = HK$7.8 approximately) per year.  The University’s vision is to become a leading university that excels in professional education, applied research and partnership for the betterment of Hong Kong, the nation and the world.
The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is a department under the Faculty of Humanities. The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies aims to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts.  It has established a strong reputation in Chinese Linguistics and Applied Chinese Language Studies, as part of our strong linguistics team that attained 23rd in QS world ranking 2014. It seeks to extend its strength in areas like Bilingualism (including Translation and Interpreting), Cross-Cultural Communication, East Asian Studies, and Speech Therapy.  The Department also aims to provide profession-based programmes that meet the career aspirations of the young adults of Hong Kong and Greater China.  It offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programmes in Bilingual Corporate Communication, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Speech Therapy, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign/Second Language, Translating and Interpreting.  It also offers programmes in Korean and Japanese at bachelor (minor) and master levels. The department incorporates the Chinese Language Centre, which provides Chinese language subjects to the whole university. Within the Department, there are a Centre for Translation Studies, a Speech Therapy Unit, and a Research Centre on Chinese linguistics. The department has extensive academic collaborations and exchanges with universities in China, Europe, Japan, Korea, and the US.
