MCLC LIST
Writing Chinese project
We are delighted to announce the launch, on Thursday 9th October, of a major project on new Chinese writing, based in the University of Leeds, UK. ‘Writing Chinese: Authors, Authority and Authorship’ brings together writers, translators, publishers, readers, literary agents and academics working in the field of contemporary Chinese literature; we aim to foster closer links and dialogue across these groups, and to help promote new Chinese writers in the UK. The project is funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, through the White Rose East Asia Centre, and will involve a series of public talks, readings and other activities over the coming academic year, culminating in a symposium at Leeds in July 2015. We will be holding a translation masterclass and competition, as well as regular blogs on our website, featuring articles on contemporary Chinese fiction and interviews with writers, translators, and others working in the field. Beginning in October, we will also be running a monthly virtual book club, focusing on up-and-coming authors, so anyone not fortunate enough to live in Yorkshire can join in too!
Our launch event on October 9th features the novelist Chen Xiwo 陈希我, described by Asian Sentinel as ‘one of China’s most outspoken voices on freedom of expression’, his translator Nicky Harman, and his publisher Harvey Thomlinson. The author reading/Q&A begins at 4:30pm in Room 1.06, Leeds University Business School. This will be followed by a drinks reception, opportunities for book purchases/signing (the event coincides with the publication of the Pen Award winning English Translation of Chen’s novel, The Book of Sins, translated by Nicky) and the official project launch, downstairs in the LUBS foyer between 5:45 and 7pm. Chen is our featured book club author for October, and one of his short stories, in both Chinese and English (with audio versions by the author and translator) is published on our website, along with other related blog posts and articles. To join our network, and participate in our online bookclub discussions, find out about how to register for our upcoming translation workshop on 1st November (led by Nicky Harman and our November-featured book club author Yan Ge 颜歌), or simply for more information on our programme, please email writingchinese at leeds.ac.uk Everyone interested in new Chinese writing, whether professionally or not, is most welcome to join us, so do get in touch.
