Evans Chan new film:  The Rose of the Name: Writing Hong Kong
The two-part 104-min film will be broadcast (with Chinese subtitles only) on Oct 5 & 12 at 8 pm in the new RTHK independent channel 31.
The film’s director’s cut/festival version will be launched at the HK Asian Film Festival on Nov 2 (BC-Yaumati) and Nov 5 (IFC).  No link has been posted yet. Here’s the blurb:

History and the labyrinth of dreams meet in ‘The Rose of the Name: Writing Hong Kong,” a docu-drama about the former British colony’s underknown literature and its latest exponent — novelist Dung Kaicheung. Born amidst the anti-colonial riots of 1967, and named Author of the Year by the Hong Kong Book Fair during the turbulence of Occupy-Central 2014, Dung Kai-cheung has become Hong Kong’s emerging voice in world literature. Through interviews with leading Chinese literary authorities (Leo Lee & David Wang), fellow novelists in Hong Kong and Taiwan (Hon Lai-chu and Lo Yi-chin), and Dung’s English, French and Japanese translators (Bonnie McDougall, Sebastian Veg, and Kyoko Nakajima), the film offers an illuminating portrait of Dung, his lineage and the current state of the Hong Kong literary world, against the backdrop of an Asian metropolis’ uncertain socio-political fortunes. Film essayist Evans Chan (Datong: The Great Society, HKAFF 2011) blends documentary, theatre, animation and performance art by filming some of Dung’s short stories on the top deck of a moving tram:  A man who falls in love with a mannequin, another who researches a non-existent street, yet another — or are they all the same person? — who has strange encounters among ghostly tombstones. ”The Rose of the Name” explores not only the challenge faced by a writer working in a so-called “cultural desert,” but also a post-colonial people’s search for its voice and place in Greater China and the world.
A press screening at the Hong Kong Arts Centre is being planned.
