An International Conference on Taiwanese Literature
“New Frontiers of Taiwan Studies: Reflections on Globalization and Class
Restructuring”
National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan
October 24-25, 2014

In the study of Taiwanese literature, postcolonialism has long served as a
theoretical paradigm, emphasizing the resistance of the colonized to their
colonizers and the significance of decolonization even in a postcolonial
era. Although this line of research in Taiwanese culture and literature
has been fruitful, the approach is limited. On the one hand, the binary
opposition between the colonizer and the colonized often obscures class,
ethnic, and gender contradictions embedded in Taiwanese literature,
particularly during the decades of the KMT regime in Taiwan. On the other
hand, postcolonialism has not adequately addressed issues of class,
including class exploitation and struggle, the decline of agricultural
sectors, the migration of rural populations, and the discrepancy between
urban and rural development.

As globalization has accelerated its pace and class conflict has become
increasingly intense, it is important to look beyond the binary opposition
of the oppressor and the oppressed and to rethink the framework of class
studies and globalization that literary scholars employ in their research.
To this end, we call for papers for an international conference, “New
Frontiers in Taiwan Studies: Reflections on Globalization and Class
Restructuring.” The conference is planned for October 24-25, 2014, in
Xinzhu, Taiwan, and is supported by the Graduate Institute of Taiwan
Literature, National Tsing Hua University. Topics include, but are not
limited to, the following:

1. The globalization of capitalism and its critique in Taiwanese
literature
2. Cultural and literary exchanges during and after the Cold War era
3. Taiwanese literature/cinema and transnational popular culture
4. Migration, class division, and class restructuring
5. Marxist and class-based approaches to Taiwanese literature
6. Beyond postcolonial theory: rethinking the paradigm of globalization

Language: English and Chinese.
