This Week on China Digital Times, May 8, 2014

Since the detention of free-speech lawyer Pu Zhiqiang, netizens have
reacted by posting messages of implicit support for him. These messages of
solidarity have caught the attention of the “Ministry of Truth,” which in
turn issued directives instructing websites to remove references to the
alleged “disturbance” created by Pu Zhiqiang and his fellow June 4
commemorators. In CDT cartoonist Badiucao’s rendering, Pu Zhiqiang’s heavy
gaze penetrates the screen and his hands mime the numbers six and four,
shorthand for the student-led democracy movement and subsequent military
crackdown of June 4, 1989.

CDT continues to publish a series of original news articles from 1989,
including an excerpt from a May 8 article published in Time Magazine.

Also cited for removal by censors were coverage of the clash between
Vietnamese naval ships and Chinese oil exploration vessels and stories
about a research center created to strengthen the study of the essence of
Xi Jinping’s speeches. “Do not hype bitcoins,” censors urge in advance of
the May 10-11 Global Bitcoin Summit, to be held in Beijing.

Finally this week, World of Warcraft: Cry Against Internet Censorship
tells the story of the hero of a machinima movie and the character’s
memorable rallying cry.
